Notifications
Chat can let you know about new messages even when you are working in another tab or have Astalty closed, so you don't have to keep the Chat window open to stay on top of conversations.
What You'll Get
When a new message arrives in a conversation you're not currently viewing, Chat can notify you in three ways:
- A desktop pop-up showing who messaged and a preview of the message. Clicking the pop-up opens that conversation. This works even when Astalty is in a background tab or fully closed.
- A sound — a soft chime when a new message comes in.
- A browser-tab unread count — the browser tab shows the number of unread messages and a badged icon, so new messages are easy to spot at a glance.

Allowing Notifications in Your Browser
Desktop pop-ups and sounds rely on your browser's notification permission, so each person needs to allow notifications on each browser they use.
- Open Chat in Astalty
- When your browser asks whether to allow notifications from Astalty, choose Allow
If you dismissed the prompt or previously blocked notifications, you can turn them back on from your browser's site settings for Astalty, then reload the page.
When You Won't Be Notified
Chat won't interrupt you when there's no need. You won't get a notification when:
- You're already viewing that exact conversation
- The message is in a channel you've muted
Muting a Channel
If a conversation is busy and you'd rather not be notified about every message, you can mute it. Muted channels stay silent — no pop-up and no sound — while remaining in your chat list.
- Open the direct message or group channel
- Open the Actions menu in the conversation header
- Select Mute Channel
To start receiving notifications again, follow the same steps and select Unmute Channel.
