Message Drafts
Anything you type into the Chat compose area is saved automatically as a draft. If you switch to another conversation, move to another part of Astalty, refresh the page, or close the app, your half-written message is still waiting for you when you come back.
Drafts work in both the web app and the Support Worker app. There is nothing to turn on and no Save button — it happens automatically.
How Drafts Are Saved
Your draft is saved a moment after you stop typing, and again whenever you leave the compose area. When you next open that conversation, the text is put straight back into the compose area so you can keep writing.
A draft is kept when you:
- Switch to a different direct message or group channel
- Navigate to another page in Astalty
- Refresh the browser page
- Switch to another app, or close and reopen the Support Worker app
Drafts are saved separately for each conversation, so you can have a different draft on the go in several conversations at once.
What Is Saved In A Draft
A draft saves the text of your message, including its formatting, and the message you are replying to. When you return to the conversation, the Replying to preview reappears above the compose area, so your reply stays attached to the correct message.
Drafts are also not saved while you are:
- Editing a message you have already sent — your existing draft is left untouched and comes back if you cancel the edit
- Starting a brand new conversation that has not been created yet — the draft only starts saving once the conversation exists
Drafts Are Saved On The Device You Typed Them On
Drafts are stored on the device and browser you typed them on. They are not synced to your account, which means:
- A draft typed in the web app does not appear in the Support Worker app, and the other way around
- A draft typed in one browser does not appear in another browser, or in a private/incognito window
- If someone else signs in to Astalty on the same browser or device, your saved drafts are removed
How Long Drafts Are Kept
A draft is kept for 30 days. The 30 days is counted from the last time you changed the draft, so a draft you keep coming back to and editing will not expire. Once a draft has been untouched for 30 days, it is removed automatically.
A draft is also cleared as soon as:
- The message is sent successfully
- You delete all of the text from the compose area
If A Message Fails To Send
If a message does not send — for example, because your internet connection drops — the text is not lost. It is returned to the compose area of that conversation so you can send it again, along with the message you were replying to.
What you see depends on where you are at the time:
- Still in the conversation — the compose area is outlined in red with a short error message beneath it, such as "Failed to send message. Please try again.", and your text is put back in the box.
- You have already moved elsewhere — a "Message not sent" notification appears, letting you know your text was kept as a draft in that conversation. Reopen the conversation to find it.
- In the Support Worker app — a "Message not sent" notification appears. Your text is restored to the compose area the next time you open that conversation.
Astalty does not retry a failed message on its own, so check the restored text and send it again yourself.
Leaving A Conversation While A Message Is Sending
If you press send and immediately switch conversations, navigate away, or close the app, Astalty keeps the send going in the background. If it cannot be completed, the message is not silently dropped — the text is kept as a draft in that conversation for you to resend.
