## Updating the Account Owner Within Astalty

Only the current Account Owner can transfer ownership. The new Account Owner must be another active Admin in the same Astalty account. You cannot transfer ownership to a deactivated user or an Auditor.

1. Open [Users](https://app.astalty.com.au/users) and select the active Admin who will become the new Account Owner.
2. Open their **Permissions** tab, select **Actions** on the **Permissions** card, then **Transfer Account Ownership**.

3. Read the warning, then select **I understand and would like to proceed**.

4. Type the new owner's exact name in **Confirmation**. The name is case-sensitive.
5. Enter the password for your own Astalty account.
6. Select **Transfer Ownership**.

The transfer is irreversible. The selected Admin becomes the Account Owner and receives the account ownership permissions, including subscription and user management.

> **Transferring ownership deletes your API keys**
>
> Transferring ownership permanently deletes the API keys the outgoing Account Owner holds - anything using one loses its access to this account immediately. See [API Keys](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/api).

## Update your billing contact

The billing contact is the email address Astalty sends subscription invoices and receipts to. It's often set to a shared accounts team address rather than the account owner's personal email.

When you transfer account ownership, the billing contact is **only** updated automatically if it currently matches the outgoing account owner's email. If your billing contact is a different address, it stays the same - so it won't follow the change of ownership.

> **Check your billing contact after transferring ownership**
>
> After transferring account ownership, review your billing contact so subscription invoices don't keep going to the wrong person. Unless it already matched the previous owner's email, it won't have changed. You can update it on the [Billing page](https://app.astalty.com.au/billing/invoices) - see [Updating the billing contact](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/billing/managing-your-subscription#updating-the-billing-contact) for the steps.
