# Converting User Types

> Switch a user between Standard User and Support Worker yourself, no support needed.

Astalty Premium - This feature is part of the Astalty Premium plan. See What Premium includes.

## Overview

You can convert an existing user between the two Astalty user types yourself - switching a **Standard User** to a **Support Worker**, or a **Support Worker** back to a **Standard User**. This is a self-service action, so there's no need to contact support to change a user's type.

Before you confirm a conversion, Astalty shows any billing adjustment for the current period. Depending on your subscription and billed user seats, the preview can show an immediate charge, a future charge, a credit, or no payment.

> **Not Sure Which User Type You Need?**
>
> Standard Users access Astalty through the web platform and have broader access to features like scheduling, tasks, and reporting, while Support Workers primarily use the mobile app to complete their assigned shifts. For a full breakdown, see [Inviting Users](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/users/inviting-users#user-types-standard-users-vs-support-worker-users).

> **Who Can Convert a User?**
>
> Converting a user type is available to **Admins** and the **Account Owner**. You can't convert your own account, the Account Owner's account, a deactivated user, or an Auditor.

> **Restricting Case Notes Doesn't Need a Conversion**
>
> If your only reason for converting a Support Worker is to limit which case notes they can see, you don't need to convert them. Support Workers have their own **Can view all case notes** and **Can only view case notes written by users in their user groups** toggles on their Permissions tab - see [Updating Roles and Permissions](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/roles-and-permissions#support-worker-permission-toggles).

## Converting a User

You can start a conversion from a user's profile. Head to the [Users](https://app.astalty.com.au/users) menu and select the team member you want to convert.

> **Check API keys and AI access first**
>
> Before converting a Standard User to a Support Worker, remove any keys they own from the [API Dashboard](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/api/how-to-set-up-an-api-key). Astalty cannot complete the conversion while they hold an API key.
>
> If the user has an AI seat, the conversion releases it. Ask Astalty and the MCP server stop working for that user, and any AI client they connected is signed out.

From their **Profile** tab, click the **Actions** button in the top right. Depending on the user's current type, you'll see either **Convert to Support Worker** or **Convert to Standard User**.

For example, converting a Standard User (Team Member) to a Support Worker:

Or converting a Support Worker back to a Standard User:

## Confirming the Pro-Rata Charge or Credit

After selecting the conversion, review the subscription preview in the confirmation dialog. It shows whether the change creates an immediate charge, a charge due later, a credit, or no payment. Check the amount and any due date, then select **Confirm** to complete the change.

> For a breakdown of the Standard User and Support Worker subscription rates, see the [Billing FAQs](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/billing/billing-faqs#monthly-subscription-fees).

## Updating the Role After Converting

- Converting a **Support Worker** to a **Standard User** assigns the **Team Member** role.
- Converting a **Standard User** to a **Support Worker** assigns the **Support Worker** role.

Astalty removes any permission changes the new user type cannot use, so review the user's role and **Permissions** tab afterwards, see [Updating Roles and Permissions](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/roles-and-permissions).
