> What webhooks are and how Astalty uses them to notify your systems when things happen.

Webhooks are managed from the API Dashboard. The Account Owner can manage them and can grant an Admin the **Can manage API keys and webhooks** permission. See [Grant API Key and Webhook Access](https://docs.astalty.com.au/guide/roles-and-permissions#granting-api-key-and-webhook-access).

## What is a webhook?

A **webhook** sends an HTTP request to your system after a supported event occurs in Astalty. This lets an integration react without repeatedly checking the API.

- With the [REST API](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/api/api-overview), your system starts the request.
- With a webhook, Astalty starts the request after an event.

You register a public HTTPS endpoint and choose the events it should receive. Astalty sends a signed JSON `POST` request to that endpoint for each matching event. Your system can then update another record, queue work or call the API for more information.

## Why use webhooks?

Webhooks reduce polling and API traffic. They work well for integrations that need to react to new or changed records, but your endpoint must verify signatures, handle retries and process duplicate deliveries safely.

## How webhooks work in Astalty

1. [Create a webhook](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/webhooks/setting-up-a-webhook) with an HTTPS URL and at least one event type.
2. Astalty sends a signed `POST` request when a subscribed event occurs.
3. Your endpoint [verifies the signature](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/webhooks/receiving-and-verifying-webhooks#verifying-the-signature) and returns a `2xx` response.
4. Astalty [retries a failed delivery](https://docs.astalty.com.au/developers/webhooks/receiving-and-verifying-webhooks#retries-and-delivery) on a backoff schedule.
